Henri Cartier-Bresson (1908 - 2004)

Godfather of photojournalism and a founder of the Magnum photo agency, Henri Cartier-Bresson might just be one of the greatest photographers of his time. A shy Frenchman took 'snap shooting' to a higher level, the level of a refined art. His ability to catch the decisive moment, using only a Leica camera with a 50 mm lens(or occasionally a telephoto for landscapes), his eye and love for shadows, lines and shapes, his unique view on mankind and life itself, has made him a legendary figure amongst contemporary photojournalists. Critics might accuse him of being nothing more than a snap-shooter, but they are snapshots only in the classic sense of instantaneous exposures, snapshots elevated to the level of art. His work is streetphotography and art combined into a new Cartier-Bresson category.
